Sometimes I just feel old. I'm really getting wrinkly and memory-burps that used to be just once in awhile are daily occurrences now. This past weekend I noticed a couple of gray eyelashes - jeez I guess my occasional "no make-up" days will now have to include at least some mascara.
At least I can count on my Babies to keep me young. Well, maybe not. Man, how my knees creak sometimes when we have had a extra-long Circle Time. And my bottom falls asleep when I sit Indian style on the floor lacing beads or working on puzzles. Okay, maybe my Babies don't keep me young - they just keep me young at heart.
They show me the joy of bubbles, basic manners like "Please" and "Thank You", big-out-of-the-blue-just-because-hugs, those huge baby smiles (WOW), and Saltines & Peanut Butter with Apple Juice.
They remind me how great a book with a lovely rhyme can be. How with good enough illustrations and/or large enough print a book can be "read" from an upside down perspective. And if it's a really good book, sometimes you don't even need to see the pictures. If it is a real classic, the pictures can be inside your head like magic. Or, as in the case with Where The Wild Things Are you don't always need the book because some of us have it memorized by heart and can say it while we are waiting for our lunch plates.
Just today Q-Man uncovered a new favorite book for us to embrace, My Mother is Mine by Marion Dane Bauer. It was story time, we were all circled around with a pile of Library books. We read a few, then we read this one. Q-Man was in the saucer next to me, his mouth opened up big, his eye-twinkle more bright than usual, he look lovingly at me as I read. He smiled at the end. We read that one twice - he even liked it more the second time. What can we say, he has great taste.
They are so sweet, they soak in everything around them, and they appreciate all the little things you do for them. I can't tell you how great it feels to hear a "Thank You" just after changing a really nasty diaper (and I have a couple of girls who will tell me that). What an honor I've been given to see them move through their milestones and into their own little beings.
I may feel too old sometimes, but mostly I'm still just young enough. I have to be - because I'm not done learning yet. And look - I figured out how to add a picture to my post (and it only took and hour). Around here, you are never too young to learn.
